John B. (Jim) Kilroy founded Kilroy Realty and raced the very successful KIALOA maxi-yachts (KIALOA I, KIALOA II, KIALOA III, KIALOA IV and KIALOA V) from the 1950s to the 1980s.

Born in Ruby, Alaska, on May 1, 1922, Kilroy grew up in Southern California during the Great Depression and in 1940 was hired at Douglas Aircraft, where he started off as an inspector and quickly studied manufacturing processes.

After serving in the US Army Air Corps Reserve (1944-46) and no longer with Douglas, he began to realize the potential of commercial real estate. Kilroy focused on prime sites near Southern California airports, all the while developing a passion for racing sailboats.

In 2012, he published a memoir, "Dare to Win", that includes lessons on business, sailing and life.
